First Robotic Prostatectomy Conducted in Shanghai

The China-made robotic system, MicroPort demonstrated its abilities through a complete Robot Assisted Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy (RALRP).

As the first robotic-surgery device made domestically in China, the system known as Toumai allows the surgeon to move robotic arms and complete the surgery with a better range of motion than that of the human hand, cutting the operation time and creating less impact on nerves and blood vessels.

The laparoscopic surgical robot was developed by MicroPort in ZhangJiang High-Tech Park in the Pudong New Area.

In the United States, 85 percent of patients receive treatment through the use of RALRP surgery.

Sun Yinghao, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said till now China’s RALRP surgeries were completed using imported systems, meaning a higher cost and limited choice, but Toumai is set to change this situation due its technical strengths.

The robot also applies homegrown technologies and makes it easier for surgeons to operate. A technical innovation, the robot will hit the market after review by China Drug Administration. [APBN]
